Paying Child Support and Executing Time-Sharing During the Covid-19 Pandemic

The most recent child support statistics come from the “Custodial Mothers and Fathers and Their Child Support” report done in 2015. This report states that in 2015, 33.7 billion dollars was owed with only 60% of those funds received by custodial mothers and fathers. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought financial strain on millions of Americans with little help from the federal government. Although many Americans have received stimulus checks from the government, child support payments are still required to be completed. If you are finding it difficult to make child support payments due to finical pressure caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, it is recommended to communicate your struggle with the opposing party and try to reach an agreement for temporarily reducing payments. This agreement should be made in writing and then submitted to the courts for approval. Missing payments could encourage a judge to find you in contempt of court or you could face other repercussions like suspension of your driver’s license.

Executing effective time-sharing during the COVID-19 pandemic has also become difficult for families with minor children. Some states require that you quarantine for two weeks upon crossing state borders. This can make carrying out established time-sharing schedules both timely and costly. It is recommended to meet at your state border to bypass this two-week quarantine requirement. Judges are asking parents to “act reasonably” in regards to accessing the risks that come with time-sharing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Everyone has been affected by this deadly virus whether it has been losing a loved one, questioning job security, sacrificing time that could be spent with family, etc. It is important to remember that the minor children involved and their needs are of the utmost priority. Navigating through these uncharted times can be extremely difficult but can be done with compassion and understanding.
